Replicanti e tecnorealismo

Mirror images and techno-realism

Johnson's sculptures are representational, but above all they are innovative and extremely modern in their technology.
They are bronzes executed by the artist with very complex procedures. Particularly meticulous is the coloring of the metal, obtained through a very remarkable number of layers of color, and the intricate textures the surfaces.

These sculptures in a human form and with surprisingly human features that would like to intermingle with us, to inhabit the same spaces that we ourselves frequent.

Giorgio Di Geneva has correctly emphasized the naturalitas of Johnson's bronze people, pointing out the communicative immediacy of the "Replications". Indeed, I would like to further develop the argument observing that the appearance of the sculptures is without doubt "naturalism" even if the technique used is surprising because of its technical sophistication artificiality.

It's almost as if these were materials and procedures coming to us from the future rather than the present. In this ambiguous, subtly contradictory dialectic between nature and artifice lies a great deal of the effectiveness of the replications: they appeal to us immediately because they are made exactly as we are, they have our same poses; they invite us to enter into a confidential relationship with them and then they send us away again with the resounding perfection of their material.
It is as if they took delight in having fooled us, and now we are aware of an unexpected, intense embarrassment in admiring a "double" that is not like us, that is perhaps better than we are...
